Job Purpose
As a key member of the bioinformatics scrum team, the Associate Biocurator will:
- Support the generation of high-quality genomic annotations for company projects, such as GEiGS Biocompute (e.g., miRNA precursors, siRNA, gene target selection).
- Contribute to the design and implementation of the Tropic knowledgebase, including the collection and curation of annotations for Tropic crops (e.g., SNPs, genome edits, sgRNAs).
- Promote, train, and integrate user experience (UX) feedback to enhance the Tropic knowledgebase across the organisation (e.g., internal tools like genome browsers and atlases).
- Collaborate closely with stakeholders—including project managers, users, and bioinformaticians—to translate business needs into effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate, curate, and consolidate genomic annotations to design GEiGS solutions and analyse genotyping data to provide insights to the genotyping team.
- Assist in the design and implementation of robust data structures and data management processes.
- Facilitate the transition of teams to knowledgebase-driven workflows, including preparing genomic data for genome browsers and training users across platforms, crops, and technology development.
- Identify and develop new knowledgebases, particularly at the intersection with the genotyping and crop teams.
- Support BIX team with tasks as required at the discretion of the head of Bioinformatics.
Essential Requirements
- BSc or MSc in Bioinformatics, Biology, Genetics, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 1–2 years of direct, hands-on experience in bioinformatics or genomic analysis.
- Strong understanding of scientific and bioinformatics research methodologies in at least one domain (e.g., genotyping, transcriptomics, etc.).
- Several years of experience working with experimental data.
- Basic proficiency in Python or another programming language.
- Knowledge of genetic editing in plants.
- Experience handling and transforming large, complex datasets.
- Familiarity with exotic or complex genomes (e.g., banana).
- Ability to design and lead the implementation of solutions and processes from inception (e.g., analysis of complex mutations).
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in dynamic, multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication skills with both biologists and bioinformaticians.
- High attention to details and accuracy in completing assignments.
- Evidence of both effective teamwork and independent research accomplishments.
Desirable Attributes
- Understanding of data standards and ontologies, and their role in structured data management.
- Experience in navigating and querying the main public omic databases and knowledge base
- Experience with genomic and NGS data, including analysis pipelines in R or Python.
- Familiarity with Scrum Agile principles.
- Familiarity with GitLab or other version control systems.
- Understanding of cloud computing environments.
- Experience working in a remote, globally distributed team.
- A scientific or engineering mindset, with a commitment to knowledge sharing, collaboration, and attention to detail.
